Level 4 Award and Certificate in Playwork (QCF)

What do the qualifications cover?

These qualifications provide in-depth information about the role of the Level 4 playworker when working with children and young people between the ages of 4 to 16.

The Award provides the knowledge required to understand the value of play to children and young people, the theories that underpin this and the role of the playwork organisation in supporting children and young people’s play. The Certificate covers the wider knowledge and skills needed when leading practice and supervising staff in a playwork setting.


Who is it suitable for?

Playworkers who have a wide knowledge and understanding of children and young people and a deep appreciation of playwork principles and practice.


What are the entry requirements?

You should be at least 18 years old. Colleges or training providers may have their own guidelines.


How many credits are required to complete them?

The Award requires 9 credits and the Certificate requires 36 credits. The credits from the Award can be carried over and counted towards the Certificate.


How are they assessed?

They will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include, direct observation in the workplace, expert witness evidence, written assignments and reflection on your own practice


Do you need to be working to take the qualifications?

You do not need to be working to take the Award. You will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement for the Certificate as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.


How long do they take to complete?

You can usually complete both the Award and Certificate in a year.


What related qualifications can you progress to?

Level 5 Diploma in Playwork or other Level 4 and 5 professional development playwork qualifications.
